World Meat Free Day and Coronation Street
13 June at 10:35AM
On Monday 13th June 2016 we will be supporting World Meat Free Day, a global campaign trying to get people around the world to change their diet for just one day. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of eating less meat and demonstrate how it can result in fairer food systems and better results for our planet.
Overconsumption of meat has a massive impact on our environment, human health, animal welfare. If population growth and current agricultural practices continue at the same rate, it has been predicted that meat production will double by the year 2050, reaching a total of 200 million tonnes. This will, of course, put enormous strain on the Earth’s resources, for more information.
Our Coronation Street team continue to demonstrate our commitment to our Planet priorities and will be supporting the campaign by taking meat off the lunch menu at their site restaurant for the day. Working with our onsite restaurant providers Baxterstorey there will be a menu which celebrates World Meat Free Day. Our Coronation Street Site has around 200 colleagues, if all of these people went meat free for lunch this could be a GWP (Global Warming Potential) equivalent of driving a bus for 2458.89 miles. To find out more about impacts of switching to meat free meals.
Coronation Street continue to lead the way in sustainable production, they have previously won the inaugural Film and Television award at the tenth Observer Ethical Awards and are albert certified.
“It is great that ITV are supporting World Meat Free Day, I can come to work and take part, it really makes me think about how my eating and lifestyle affects our environment. It amazes me that going meat free for one meal is the carbon saving equivalent of boiling the kettle 388 times! I think it is little steps like this that can really help make change”
Robbie Sandison, Head of Production, Coronation Street
